Frequently Asked Questions | General

WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED?

I'm based out of Huntington Beach California, but YES I travel all over California and beyond! Travel fees do apply to locations outside of Los Angeles and Orange County.

HOW FAR IN ADVANCE DO I NEED TO BOOK?

I often book 3-6 months in advance, but do my best to accommodate immediate needs. Please feel free to contact me for availability.

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE MY HORSE?

I encourage my riders to do whatever show preparation you would typically do on your horse for a big competition; groomed, clipped, hoof polish etc. Avoid excessive oil and show sheen so the oil won't get on your clothes while cuddling your horse and you don't fall off if we do try to get on bareback! Tack is completely a preference, but I always encourage a clean bridle or leather halter!

I DON'T THINK MY BARN IS PRETTY.

About 90% of my Horse + Rider shoots are located where the horse is boarded as it is where they are most comfortable. You'd be surprised what beauty I can find at a barn or even on the nearby trails. However, I do have some great spots all over Orange County and Los Angeles to haul into, should you be worried about the backdrop.

WHAT DO I WEAR?

I know the struggle, TRUST ME! Its important to keep things like the weather, personal features, and your horse's color in mind when choosing your outfits. More then anything, choose clothes that reflect your own personal style and that you are comfortable in. All my clients are given wardrobe suggestions based off their body type, skin tone, and personal style in their client portal for extra help!

CAN I STILL GET BLACK BACKGROUNDS DONE IF I BOOK A SMALLER PACKAGE?

Absolutely! Black Backgrounds are only $175 per horse when booked alongside ANY Horse + Rider session (saving you an extra $25). We will shoot your horse's portrait session before we start your Horse + Rider session.

RECEIVING YOUR IMAGES

Standard turn around time for Horse + Rider’s is 2-4 weeks. I offer expedited editing for an additional $100 with a 48 hour turnaround for immediate needs. You will receive an email with a link to your online gallery where you can download your digital files and purchase prints if desired.

PRINTS AND CANVAS

Digital images are presented with a small watermark but removed when prints are purchased. I offer a large selection of different types of prints and sizes including luster prints, stand out prints, metal prints, and canvas. Limited canvas sizing is listed on the purchasing options but there are many different options to fit your needs! Please inquire with me after for a specific dimension.

Why do you not include a print release?

I completely understand you want the freedom to print your photos whenever you want! This is why I do offer print releases as an add on at an additional fee. However, please understand that many consumer labs are not suited for this quality and type of work and as such, I cannot guarantee the quality of those quick print labs. Sometimes, they will print images that look too muted or make skin look too orange and we don’t want you looking like an oompa loompa, do we?!?! Where as, if you print through me, my professional lab partners can ensure the quality of your artwork for years to come! Let me know if you want prices for personal print releases.

What if I want to use the images for commercial use?

Commercial licensing is handled on a case by case basis. All images provided are for personal use only and copyrighted with Sara Shier Photography, so please let me know ahead of time if you have any plans to use images for your equine related business!

PAYMENT

At the time of booking, you will be given access to the client portal where you will be able to pay your invoice and sign your contract. Just as all sessions with me, I require a $100 retainer to solidify your date! The remaining balance is due at time of session. I accept all forms of payment (but cash is always appreciated) so feel free to use what is most convenient for you!

Frequently Asked Questions | Black Backgrounds

WHATS REQUIRED

BBG sessions are a stress-free and painless setup. I don’t shoot with any artificial backdrop or lights to make the expereince as convenient and stress free for both horse and owner as possible. The session is done with natural lighting from the entrance to a barn aisle or indoor arena. Everything is edited out using Photoshop! I'd advise a clean area, lights off or barn doors closed if able.

I’ve been known for making the most extreme situations work including mare motels and storage sheds. If you do not have a barn aisle please send images of your situation and I will let you know if it is possible. Although I can make situations work, I will not be able to produce the same quality of images without the proper set up.

Extra hands are always EXTREMELY helpful, but not required.

HOW TO PREPARE

The amount of preparation is completely up to you but the cleaner the horse the better the images! A lot of editing goes into making these images so most cuts and blemishes can be taken out, but I cannot make a dirty horse look clean. I advise doing any  "show preparation" in which you would normally do; clipped ears, muzzles, and hoof polish can really make all the difference! All my clients are given a complete preparation guide for your horse before your session for extra help!

Can you photograph my horses together?

Contrary to popular belief, images of horses and dogs together are actually shot seperately and photoshopped together. Horses/ dogs are required to have a full session booked for compilation photos, but I always throw in 1 images of 2 horses FREE! Have more you want in a photo? Inquire when booking for prices!

DOGS?

YES! I would LOVE to shoot your dog as well! Set up and the package is exactly the same. They also count towards receiving barn discounts!

MARE AND FOAL?

We can most definitely shoot your mare and foal together! They will still count as two horses as they will be edited together and "shot separately" in my camera to ensure the best features of the horses are captured!
