How to Quit your 9-5 with Horses in Focus: An Equine Photography Podcast

Back in 2017 Giana and Sara sat down to talk all things black backgrounds, but then ended up talking business for a few hours before coming up with the grand idea to start a podcast. Here we are a year later and releasing the Horses in Focus Podcast to share what its like working and photographing horses as well as tips and tricks to help you grow a successful business in the equine industry!

Sara: We see a lot of questions wondering “when is a good time to go full time with your photography business” so we felt it was important to share our stories and how we came to the decision to pursue our business. (2:00)

Happy 1 Year to US!

Happy 1 Year to US!

October 15th 2016 I decided to rebrand and revamp my business and started offering mini sessions for just $50 dollars.

October 27th 2017 I left my job, October 28th I sold my horse, and October 29th I moved down to Huntington Beach to start my journey as a full time photographer

Here we are October 30th 2018 to mark 1 year of being a full time photographer. It has been the hardest and most rewarding year of my life. My heart is so full and I am ever so grateful to everyone that has believed in me and allowed me to pursue my biggest goals and biggest dreams.

To You With a Camera at a Horse Show

To You With a Camera at a Horse Show

Hey sweet friend,

I’ve been wanting to write to you for a while. The thing is, our paths only seem to cross at horse shows and I think of the words I’d love to deliver you, I tend to be running from ring to ring and fail to reach you… until now. Here’s the thing, I have so much to say to you, but I’m never quite sure how to deliver it, because I see you and I know your intentions are pure.

THE SACRIFICES I MADE TO BE A PHOTOGRAPHER

THE SACRIFICES I MADE TO BE A PHOTOGRAPHER

I totally get it: the life of a photographer looks absolutely fabulous. Our Instagram feeds are full of gorgeous images, our stories tell you we are always traveling or in my case riding multiple horses a day, and we’re always telling you how we work in yoga pants.

What is there to possibly complain about?

My least favorite Question

My least favorite Question

You want to know what question I struggle with the most these days? “So what are you doing?”

I really have a hard time just proudly saying “I’m a photographer.” One of the biggest reasons is because I know I’m soooo much more than “just a photographer” so I feel a need to go on a huge tangent of the magnitude that goes into what I do and the big picture of what I want to accomplish.

My Weekly Schedule While Working From Home

My Weekly Schedule While Working From Home

One of the biggest challenges for me when I left my job and started this entrepreneurial journey was transitioning from an outside office to a work from home job. Setting boundaries, not getting distracted, and balancing the freedom of creating your own schedule is something I've had to work really hard at.

The best advice I finally listened to was sitting down and batching out my work by days and hours instead of trying to conquer the world and 50 different tasks at the same time.

The Real Life of an Entrepreneur

The Real Life of an Entrepreneur

You wake up! It’s a brand new day, you have the world’s best boss (YOU!) and you’re about to take over the world and make it freaking happen. Your friends declare you the ultimate girl boss and you're going to show the world how. But wait… it’s not that easy, is it? You log on and scroll with that cute little thumb of yours the minute your eyes squeak open in the morning and imagine a perfectly proportioned eye catchy breakfast sandwich (with an egg, duh!), foamy lattes with designs, and the styled to perfection desks.

Light, Candid, and a Whole lot of Fun

Light, Candid, and a Whole lot of Fun

This year with me diving head first into this entrepreneurial journey, I decided to dive head-on into a marketing and branding course for photographers. Part of the process is for us to assess our businesses and help brand and define the work that we created using three words. My words took me a while to figure out, my two favorite services are so completely different besides the fact that they have pretty ponies in them!

3 Reasons why you need to Hire an Equine Photographer to photograph your horse

3 Reasons why you need to Hire an Equine Photographer to photograph your horse

There's a lot that goes into photography. You're not only wearing multiple hats of being your very own accountant, web designer, marketing manager, social media manager, photographer, and editor... but at the end of the day you're hired to capture beautiful moments and create memories that leave your clients wanting to come back for more. Any photographer reading this is going yasssss girl I feel ya! My rebudle to them is: have you ever tried adding in a 1200 pound animal to that picture?

7 Things I Learned Working for Myself

7 Things I Learned Working for Myself

When I left the hustle and bustle of working in a car garage around a bunch of guys all day, I remember thinking a lot of things. I thought I was going to have more time to do the things I wanted to do, I said I was going to have time to go run on the beach, and have brunch with my friends. I thought I would have WAY more time to be riding too!

NOPE

I WAS CALLED CLASSLESS, WINEY, AND INSECURE and guess what? I simply gave myself a heavier pour of wine and then cuddled up to the man that has my whole heart and told me I was perfect to him.
This isn’t a way to prove that words don’t hurt, even that I’m giving people the satisfaction to know their opinions were heard and affected how much wine went into my glass that night or play victim, but a little reminder and motivation to anyone who dreams of making a difference in the world; don’t give up.

The Mistakes Equine Photographers are making with Model Calls

The Mistakes Equine Photographers are making with Model Calls

If you’re at all part of the Facebook Universe, you’ll see groups on groups on groups. The Equine Photography group on Facebook is one of my favorite and quite resourceful to new up and coming photographers or full blown professionals.

One of the BIGGEST topics I see discussed are Model Calls, and I also see a ton of up and coming photographers advertising “Model Calls”  across social media platforms.
